The idTAG is not a requirement for basic registration, but to enjoy the full functionality of the idRIDER app and technology, purchase is absolutely necessary.  The military-grade idTAG may also act as deterrent if a would-be thief notices the colorful registration, and if stolen the tamperproof annealed aluminum takes a very long time to remove leaving obvious signs of removal and a residue that can only be cleaned with an industrial solvent.
